Frequently Asked Questions:

What is an appraisal?
An appraisal is a legal document or a verbal opinion which describes property and estimates value.

Who is qualified to appraise?
A qualified appraiser is someone who has studied Valuation and Appraisal Science and has exhibited connoisseurship.  This appraiser is recognized by peers in the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) and the American Association of Appraisers (AAA).  The ASA and the AAA have the highest standards for membership in the industry.  A qualified appraiser has taken and passed the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and adheres to the ethics of it and the Society.

What is personal property?
Anything that you can own other than your business (including antiques, residential contents, art, furniture, collections, silver, jewelry, musical instruments, militaria, pottery, toys, dolls, memorabilia... virtually anything).

Why do I need an appraisal of personal property?

  • to learn about an item

  • to sell an item

  • to satisfy the IRS when making charitable donations or paying estate taxes

  • to schedule or claim a loss for antiques, fine art, silver, collections, etc. for insurance purposes

  • to divide property equitably for estate or divorce purposes

  • to assist with estate planning and establishing net worth

What fees are associated with an appraisal of personal property?
Normally, there is an hourly charge for on-site examination of the property; product and market research and valuation; and written documentation and photos. We offer both verbal and written appraisals based on your particular requirements.

In some cases, a specified amount can be agreed upon by the client and appraiser.  In other cases, additional fees (over and above the hourly charges) may be assessed for extensive research on rare or unique items, the use of outside consultants, courtroom testimony, or travel time.

For written appraisals, we require a signed contract and a retainer to cover initial expenses; balances are charged upon completion of the written documents. An estimate of the total charges will be provided following the examination of the item(s). Personal Property Consultants' appraisers never charge a percentage of an item's value. To do so would be highly unethical.
